On the sequential access theorem and deque conjecture for splay trees
نویسنده
چکیده
We give a new, simple proof for the sequential access theorem for splay trees. For an n-node splay tree, our bound on the number of rotations is 4:5n, with a smaller constant than the bound of 10:8n concluded by Tarjan. We extend our proof to prove the deque conjecture for output-restricted deques. Our proofs provide additional insights into the workings of splay trees. c © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Multi-Splay Trees
In this thesis, we introduce a new binary search tree data structure called multi-splay tree and prove that multi-splay trees have most of the useful properties different binary search trees (BSTs) have. First, we demonstrate a close variant of the splay tree access lemma [ST85] for multi-splay trees, a lemma that implies multi-splay trees have the O(log n) runtime property, the static finger p...
متن کاملThesis Proposal: Multi-Splay Trees
In this thesis, we introduce multi-splay trees (MSTs) and prove several results demonstrating that MSTs have most of the useful properties different BSTs have. First, we prove a close variant of the splay tree access lemma [ST85] for multi-splay trees, a lemma that implies MSTs have the O(log n) runtime property, the static finger property, and the static optimality property. Then, we extend th...
متن کاملGreedy Is an Almost Optimal Deque
In this paper we extend the geometric binary search tree (BST) model of Demaine, Harmon, Iacono, Kane, and Pǎtraşcu (DHIKP) to accommodate for insertions and deletions. Within this extended model, we study the online Greedy BST algorithm introduced by DHIKP. Greedy BST is known to be equivalent to a maximally greedy (but inherently offline) algorithm introduced independently by Lucas in 1988 an...
متن کاملDynamic Optimality and Multi-Splay Trees1
The Dynamic Optimality Conjecture [ST85] states that splay trees are competitive (with a constant competitive factor) among the class of all binary search tree (BST) algorithms. Despite 20 years of research this conjecture is still unresolved. Recently Demaine et al. [DHIP04] suggested searching for alternative algorithms which have small, but non-constant competitive factors. They proposed tan...
متن کاملA Study on Splay Trees
We study the dynamic optimality conjecture, which predicts that splay trees are a form of universally efficient binary search tree, for any access sequence. We reduce this claim to a regular access bound, which seems plausible and might be easier to prove. This approach may be useful to establish dynamic optimality.
